The writing’s on the wall …..
… at the New Barrack Tavern where Kev and Steph Woods have brought together archive deeds, photos and plans to begin the written history of one of Sheffield’s most iconic pubs. Steph says even the ‘new’ has been revealed to be a bit of a misnomer. “We should actually be the New New Barrack Tavern, as our pub, which dates from 1936, replaced the former New Barrack Tavern, itself named after its long gone predecessor.
“The front bar, nowadays also home to a vintage bar billiard table, boasts the best of the archives, and includes photos that show the pub in its ample grounds before the dualling of the Penistone Road. We’re still looking for more; old menus, price lists and all the other ephemera that’s simply chucked,” she says.
The New Barrack Tavern’s archive was opened for the CAMRA AGM weekend in Sheffield in April 2011.
