Fox’s scoffers are a credit to Newark

Throughout Euro 2012, there was one extra challenge for the good people of Newark. Who could eat the Fox and Crown’s massive Euro Burger 2012 fastest and beat the imposed 30 minute barrier with the most to time to spare and no crumbs left on the plate?

Manager, Jemma Mankin, issued the challenge to all-comers throughout the football tournament with the warning, “If you’re worried about your weight, then don’t even think about entering.”

By England’s quarter final exit, 12 men, and one women, had tucked in their napkins to down the monster with its two beef burgers, two chicken breasts, garlic butter, pork and black pudding meatballs in tomato sauce, bacon, melted cheese with lettuce and tomato, on home made ciabatta bread…. and chips.

“No one is counting the calories,” said Jemma. “And despite the size, two glorious gourmets have managed to finish with the fastest, Dave Heason, downing the last morsel in an amazing 24 minutes and 52 seconds.

“Dave won an immediate pint of Castle Rock ale and became the supreme champion winning a gallon of ale,” says Jemma.

Dan Lovatt, who created the Euro Burgers in the Fox and Crown’s kitchen, says each took around 30 minutes to make adding: “not counting the time for baking our bread.

“This is the first time I’ve been asked to create a meal like this, but I’ve got used to it as we’re honouring the Tour de Fox, during the French classic cycle race, and an Olympic marathon meal in August,” says Dan.

The Fox and Crown’s Euro Burger cost £13.75. It weighed in at over 3lb and contained over 20oz of meat.
