We have always enjoyed tipping our hats and raising a glass to local and regional legends. Be it Vicky McClure or Viv Anderson, we’ve had some great fun brewing all kinds of beer to celebrate Nottinghamshire’s notables.

With the NET Masters Hockey World Cup 2022 around the corner, we thought the timing was perfect to honour local hero, Graham Griffiths.

The Man: Graham Griffiths

Graham Griffiths, or simply ‘Griff’ to most, is much-loved within the world of hockey. He’s worked tirelessly at pushing the sport forward in the city and has devoted over 40 years of his life to doing so. Graham is Chairman of the historic Beeston Hockey Club and has fought for its existence through thick and thin. If that wasn’t enough, he was also a key figure in developing the Nottingham Hockey Centre, an asset to the local community. (And England’s top hockey facility.)

So, with this in mind, we set out to prepare a suitable beer to commemorate such a man! We are unveiling the beer tonight at one of Beeston’s finest establishments, The Vic. The best part? It’s a total surprise.

The Launch

The Victoria Hotel in Beeston seemed the perfect pub, due to its longstanding ties with the hockey club. It was also home to the late Neil Kelso, former manager, hockey player and back in the day, fellow Castle Rockian. (He actually ran the Vic, back when it was part of the Castle Rock estate.)

We enlisted the help of Griff’s son, David Griffiths, to help us organise the launch of the beer, completely without his knowledge.

The Beer: Griff

Brewed to celebrate Griff, the beer’s namesake, and the Masters Hockey World Cup which begins on 12th August. We wanted to celebrate everything that is great about British beer: our brewing, home-grown hops and cask ale. Using 100% UK ingredients we have brewed a classic golden ale with Bramling Cross and Olicana hops. This mix brings a combination of subtle fruit flavours of citrus and blackberry into the mix, followed up by a satisfying bitterness.

The beer will be will be available at the Victoria Hotel in Beeston and at Nottingham Hockey Centre throughout the Hockey World Cup. Punters will also be able find it at various Castle Rock pubs throughout August.

NET Masters Hockey World Cup 2022

The competition sees some of the greatest hockey teams from around the world going head to head here in Nottingham. Taking place between 12th-21st August, teams from over 50 countries will gather at Nottingham Hockey Centre.

To celebrate, NET! Tram is offering a discounted travel pass to anyone involved in the tournament.

Castle Rock pubs will also be offering 10% off all purchases in their pubs* with the production of a valid tram ticket. More info here.

Massive thank you to David Griffiths, for all your help organising the launch, and to the Vic for having us tonight.
