Yesterday, we had the pleasure of attending the Heron Music Café, held at the Poppy and Pint. It was a lovely start to the week, getting the chance to speak to the organisers, learn about people’s stories and of course, sing our little hearts out!
Founded in 2018, the Heron Music Café is designed to offer a welcoming space for individuals facing mental health challenges, dementia, caregiving responsibilities, or loneliness. Additionally, it gives people a warm, friendly environment where they can relax, sing, dance, and leave their worries behind.
The organisers, Musicworks, are well aware of the social isolation many face. As a result, the Heron Music Café was created to bring people together through the healing power of music. It has been amazing to work alongside a charity which holds close to its heart so many of the same values as ourselves, namely, the power of the pub to bring a community together, combatting loneliness and improving the lives of individuals through genuine connections that can last a lifetime.
Recently, the charity has been granted a whopping £81,172 of funding from The National Lottery Fund to support the café. The money will be used over the next five years to sustain the café, extend its services and provide online sessions for those who cannot attend in person. The money will also help train musicians and volunteers.

We want to take a moment to recognise everyone involved in running the café – without you, these vital sessions at the Poppy and Pint wouldn’t be possible. Not only do these get together’s for a sing-song and a dance make people’s Mondays, they provide an opportunity for the community to come together and support its most vulnerable members. Thank you for all the amazing work you do for people suffering with dementia, mental health issues and more, it’s truly amazing.

The Heron Music Café takes place every other Monday at the Poppy and Pint. AND, excitingly the charity is planning on making the café weekly! Keep an eye here for updates.
