Slate – A Bold Stout Born in the Lakes

Duke from Sales and Rachel from Marketing packed their bags and headed north to the stunning Lake District for a collaboration with the brilliant team at Fell Brewery – and what followed was a brew day packed with flavour, hospitality, and a fair bit of hard graft (from Duke!).

We were invited up by Jonny, who made sure our trip started in style by putting us up at The Royal Oak in Cartmel – a 17th-century inn and one of Fell’s beautiful pubs with rooms. After a proper night’s rest (and maybe a pint or two), we joined brewers Scott, Midge, and Rory to get to work on something dark and delicious.

Introducing: Slate – 5.5% Stout

Slate is a smooth, complex stout built on a carefully constructed malt grist. Expect rich, layered notes of dark chocolate, ripe dates, and a subtle hint of bramble – full-flavoured, yet incredibly drinkable.

One of the standout details? A unique fermentation profile thanks to the use of two yeast strains – classic Yorkshire and Nottingham – a choice Scott walked us through in brilliant detail. It was great to get stuck into the process with such a thoughtful and passionate team.

And speaking of getting stuck in – Duke earned himself full bragging rights by digging out the mash tun solo, an effort that left him aching (and occasionally reminding us of it!) for days afterwards.

Pints, People & a Perfect BBQ

With the brew safely in tank, Michael from the Fell team fired up the barbecue and absolutely raised the bar for return leg collabs – good food, great beer, and perfect surroundings made for one seriously memorable afternoon.

We wrapped up the day with some music chat and design talk with Watson, who created the stunning keg badge for Slate.

Coming Soon…

Slate will be pouring in both our bars and Fell’s in the coming weeks. As well as being showcased at Nottingham Craft Beer Festival. Huge thanks to Jonny, Scott, Midge, Rory, Michael, and the whole Fell crew for the warm welcome, the tasty stout, and the aching arms. See you in Nottingham soon for round two very soon!
