Castle Rock Brewery’s Beer’d Festival at Nottingham races was a day for novices. And we’re not just talking about the young fillies and mares that took to the field in the first three races; no, some of the guests were high on inexperience too.
Graham Percy, a novice with three previous race meetings under his ample belt, decided that pundits’ tips, past form and appearance were no help when it came to betting. Instead, he chose a much less scientific system: bet on any horse with ‘roc’ or ‘rock’ in the name. There was ample to choose from; ‘Capla Rock’ (third at 8/1 in the Poppy & Pint Lady Bay Fillies Novice Stakes); Devils Roc (ninth); Emerald Rocket (seventh); Rocky Shores (fourth), and Sky Rocket (12th). With results like these it doesn’t take a novice to realise his system failed.
After the disappointment on the track, Mr Percy skulked his way back to the beer tent to enjoy an ale or two to drown his sorrows. With 12 Castle Rock cask beers, three keg and a range of local guest ales from the likes of Totally Brewed and Black Iris, his choice wasn’t limited. This teamed with and the knowledgeable company, it’s a invitation to a great night out that many will be keen to have next year.
Will Graham Percy go again? – you bet…
