Su Pollard, the magical mermaid in ‘Peter Pan’ at the Theatre Royal, has laid down her wand and taken off her tiara to pull the first pint of her own Nottinghamian Celebration Ale. The tasting session and launch party was at the city’s Vat and Fiddle pub.
Su’s ‘Su Pollard’ beer, is Castle Rock Brewery’s latest creation in a series brewed to celebrate famous sons and daughters of Nottingham. The ale is available throughout the panto run and into February and March at pubs across the East Midlands and Yorkshire.
Born on Bentinck Road in Nottingham in 1949, Su Pollard first performed at Berridge Road Infant School where she played the part of an angel. She came second to a singing dog in ‘Opportunity Knock’s in 1974, before enthralling the nation as Peggy, the chalet maid, in ‘Hi-Di-Hi’. Later successes included ‘Oh, Dr Beeching’ and ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’.
Speaking to the Nottingham Post, Su said the beer tasted a delight. “It’s smooth, frothy and goes down a double, triple, treat,” she said. She made a solemn promise to return to the pub with her friends from the cast.
‘Peter Pan’ opened at the Theatre Royal on Saturday 7 December and continues until Sunday 12 January. It stars Su Pollard, David Hasselhoff and Barney Harwood.
