We are delighted to announce that Henry Normal will be celebrating his namesake brew by Castle Rock with a special gig (with support) at the Vat & Fiddle on 3rd April 2017.

Nottingham-born poet, comedian, tv producer and writer Henry Normal is to be honoured by Castle Rock Brewery with the brewing of a namesake beer ‘Henry Normal’.  The 4.2 per cent golden mild ale, the second in the Nottinghamian Celebration series for 2017, is being brewed on UNESCO World Poetry Day (21 March).  It will be in prime condition for its launch at the Vat and Fiddle pub a few days later before going to local pubs during the Nottingham Poetry Festival which takes place across the city in April.

The Nottingham Poetry Festival runs from Friday 21 until Sunday 30 April.  Sponsored Castle Rock Brewery, it will bring some of the UK’s best known, and most popular poets, including Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage and Dr John Cooper Clarke to the city.

Venues include Castle Rock’s Poppy and Pint hosting an evening with John Hegley and the Mulletproof Poet on Sunday 30 April.  During the festival, Henry will be touring eight local libraries with a free show called Poetry Hour.  “This’ll feature a guest poet and readings from the audience and as they take place in the early evening, there’ll be plenty of time to pop down to the pub for a glass of ‘Henry Normal’ afterwards,” says Henry.

‘Henry Normal’, the ale, will have its first tasting as Henry Normal, the person, pulls the first pint on Monday 3 April at the Vat and Fiddle pub.  And, as a prelude to the Nottingham Poetry Festival and to round off the beer launch, Henry is staying at the pub to perform a festival preview set with a support act celebrating Nottingham, his life and his beer – to which we invite all of our customers – this free event guarantees to be a lot of fun.

Henry Normal says: “Quality and passion are virtues that show through in both writing and brewing.  I’m honoured to be chosen by Castle Rock Brewery joining such Nottingham legends as Alan Sillitoe and D.H Lawrence.  I’m not sure I could keep up with either on a Saturday night and even in Byron’s case strangely enough, a Sunday morning.”

Castle Rock’s Lewis Townsend has long wanted to honour his favourite poet in the brewery’s Nottinghamian series.   “Henry has produced, and been part of, some of Britain’s finest home-grown comedies from Hebbern to The Trip, the Royle Family, Mighty Boosh and Mrs Merton.   He is, in my view, a national treasure with Nottingham at his very core,” says Lewis

The Nottinghamian Celebration Ales series is Castle Rock’s homage to celebrated native and adopted sons and daughters of Nottingham.  Four ales are brewed each year with ‘Stuart Broad’ and ‘Hilary Silvester’ completing the 2017 line up.
